
<html><body><div style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; color: #000000"><div>Dear colleagues in the United States,</div><div><br data-mce-bogus="1"></div><div data-marker="__SIG_PRE__">I have read the news that some US universities are considering not hiring *any* PhD student this year due to the recent political changes, budgetary announcements, and uncertainties.</div><div data-marker="__SIG_PRE__"><br data-mce-bogus="1"></div><div data-marker="__SIG_PRE__">French universities and research centers do offer scholarships for PhD students, and post-doc positions. There is no need to speak French (at least in computer science).</div><div data-marker="__SIG_PRE__"><br data-mce-bogus="1"></div><div data-marker="__SIG_PRE__">Applications are however organized differently from what they are in the US</div><div data-marker="__SIG_PRE__">1) one normally has to have a master's degree before enrolling into PhD (because PhD programs in France are light on graduate classes)</div><div data-marker="__SIG_PRE__">2) one typically has to contact a possible PhD advisor before doing the formal application process.</div><div data-marker="__SIG_PRE__"><br data-mce-bogus="1"></div><div data-marker="__SIG_PRE__">In addition, some universities, including the one in Grenoble, have some "advance application" programs early in Spring for exceptional foreign students, in addition to the other application processes.</div><div data-marker="__SIG_PRE__"><br data-mce-bogus="1"></div><div data-marker="__SIG_PRE__">To summarize, should you have very good students who wish to continue into graduate studies but cannot do so in the US, or feel to uncertain about doing so in the current climate, and would be willing to consider moving to France, I would advise them contacting directly researchers that are close to their area of interest. Even if they cannot host them, they will be able to redirect them to others.</div><div data-marker="__SIG_PRE__"><br data-mce-bogus="1"></div><div data-marker="__SIG_PRE__">France has laws prohibiting discrimination based on race, gender, gender identity, disability, and sexual orientation.</div><div data-marker="__SIG_PRE__"><br data-mce-bogus="1"></div><div data-marker="__SIG_PRE__">Regards</div></div></body></html>
