PhD positions at IT University of Copenhagen (ITU) and
Department of Computer Science (DIKU), University of Copenhagen, Denmark.
Applications are invited from excellent students capable of conducting
research under supervision at the highest international level.
We currently have the following vacancies (application deadline
1st of March 2004, at 12:00 noon):
- Two PhD scholarships, funded by the Graduate School on
Foundations for Innovative Research-based Software Technologies
(FIRST). The place of enrollment depends on the nature of the PhD
project and will be either at the IT University of Copenhagen or the
Department of Computer Science, University of Copenhagen.
(Full announcement: http://www.itu.dk/English/vacancies/02N1mP/)
- Three PhD scholarships in the Theory Department at the IT University
of Copenhagen, funded by the research project "Context-dependent
Mobile Communication", which consists of two subprojects
"Bigraphical Programming Languages" and "LaCoMoCo Programming Platform".
(Full announcement: http://www.itu.dk/English/vacancies/EEugJR/)
- Additional PhD scholarships at the IT University of Copenhagen,
within, among others, the areas: Logic, Semantics, Algorithms,
Programming Language Technology, Formal Verification.
(Full announcement: http://www.itu.dk/English/vacancies/EEugJR/)
The FIRST Graduate School (first.dk) coordinates and expands activities in
theoretical computer science and fundamental software technologies.
Focus is on topics for the fundamental understanding of computer science:
semantics, logic, algorithmics, and complexity theory and applications
within verification, configuration, scheduling, concurrency, mobility,
programming languages, program analysis, compilers, and software tools.
FIRST is funded by the IT University of Copenhagen, the Department of
Computer Science at University of Copenhagen and Microsoft Business
Solutions. In addition, we currently receive funding from the Danish
Research Training Council (FUR).
The Department of Computer Science at the University of Copenhagen
(diku.dk) was established in 1970. There are currently about 1200
students enrolled at the department. The Department offers a
three-year Bachelor of Science degree (BSc.), a two-year Master of
Science degree (MSc.) and a four- and three-year PhD degree.
The IT University (itu.dk) was established in 1999. There are
currently about 1,500 students at the university. The IT University
offers graduate studies, post-graduate studies and Open University
courses in six areas: Internet and Software Technology; Multimedia
Technology; Software Development; Design, Communication, and Media;
E-business; and Interdisciplinary IT.
The Theory Department at ITU (itu.dk/research/theory) focuses on the
following research topics: algorithms and complexity theory, semantics
of logics and programming languages, categorical logic and type
theory, models of concurrency, verification, automatic test
generation, embedded systems, and mobile computation.
The Department of Innovation at ITU (itu.dk/English/research/DoI/)
aims to develop new technologies achieved through high-class research
and its innovative application. Currently, focus is on the areas of
image analysis, signal processing for mobile applications,
verification and programming language technology.

The PhD scholarships run for a period of three or four years depending
on the educational level of the student. A three-year scholarship can
only be awarded to applicants with a Master degree, equivalent to a
Danish graduate degree.
Students with a Danish bachelor degree and one additional year of
master studies or equivalent can be awarded a four-year
scholarship. Appointment and salary will be in accordance with the
agreement between the Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation
of Professional Associations (AC). Applicants must be able to document
that they will be able to fulfill the requirements before entering the
PhD programme.
The three-year scholarship pays approximately 20,000 DKK per month
exclusive of superannuation. The four-year scholarship pays
approximately 13,900 DKK per month for the first 2 years. For the last
two years the monthly sum amounts to approximately 20,000 DKK. The
salary is taxable.
The PhD programme includes coursework and the possibility of staying
in another international research environment for a period of 6
months.
To be awarded a scholarship requires enrollment as a PhD student,
which is based on an application.
The IT University invites all qualified candidates irrespective of
age, gender, religious affiliation or ethnic background to apply for
the scholarships. Applications received by E-mail will not be taken
into consideration.
Applications must be based on the full announcements found at the
address: http://www.itu.dk/English/vacancies/
Application deadline: 1 March 2004 at 12.00 noon.
