I think we've pretty much converged on a proposal for making this 
happen in the future: add stable and (sometimes) beta branches to the 
svn repository; keep new releases in beta for a while, patching as 
needed, until they stabiliz; then promote the patched version to 
stable.

We'll try this on the next release cycle (which will happen when the 
reimplementation of the merging and backup functionality is finished 
and solid).
