I'm at a conference right now.

His change with

	sed -n '$p'

(I think this was that) should work with the same effect everywhere.  It
is a portable clean sed.  Although I'm surprised that tail -1 doesn't
work on OS X, being derived from BSD.
According to POSIX

	tail -n 1 filename

should work everywhere.  Solaris has POSIX tools in /usr/xpg4/bin
AFAIK.  So one of these should work.
