I wonder if it is worth a quick look at the efficiency
of the scan. You could for example make a git repo
of the repository for comparison (git init & add). This
should approximate unison's initial scan. If unison
does particularly badly in comparison then it would be
worth optimizing, otherwise, some scheme like the one
you propose would be necessary.
